Institute of Education


Brief History


The Institute of Education (IOE) was set up in May 2004 when the Senate of the University approved its establishment. The Sandwich Degree Programmes offered in the Institute started with five (5) programmes in July 2005. Seven (7) programmes were added in 2006, and nine (9) additional programmes were included in the 2013 contact. The academic activities at the Institute have been expanding. Currently, the Institute runs all programmes approved and mounted by the Faculty of Education comprising programmes in the Departments of Education Foundations, Education Management, Arts Education, Social Sciences Education and Science & Environmental Education. The Institute also runs a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) which is a part-time programme.

The current Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah has approved part-time first degree programs and part-time post graduate degree programs for the Institute. By this development the Institute can now run both sandwich programs and part- Thus, IOE is now a beehive of academic activities all the year round. The academic and administrative components of the institute is now ICT driven and mode of delivery includes both face-to-face contact and virtual learning.


Directorate of Institute of Education

The Institute is headed by a Director who must possess a Ph.D degree in Education and not less than a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education. The Director is assisted by two (2) Deputy Directors (Academic and field Services) who are also from Faculty of Education and not less than the rank of Lecturer 1 with Ph.D degree in Education.

The administrative Unit of the Institute is headed by a Secretary who is not less than the rank of a Deputy Registrar in the University.

Philosophy

There is the growing need tor teacher protessionalism. Hence, teachers that hold the National Certificate of Education (NCE) educational managers, need to undergo further training and be exposed to a variety of courses that shall enhance their skills so that they can provide effective services. The strategic location of the University of Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has placed it at an advantage to provide such services, hence the decision to set up the lnstitute of Education to provide such professional training.

The Faculty of Education and servicing faculties in the University of Abuja have caliber and competent academic staff to teach in the Institute of Education which is a functional teaching outreach arm of the University. The institute also serves as the University data bank of human resource experts in all fields of education. One of the basic claims of professionalism for any given field of human endeavour is the quality of training given its members at the various levels of preparation. Such training enables the prospective practitioner to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and ethics that are fundamental to the overall public image of that profession. Teaching as a profession therefore requires a period of qualitative training both at the pre-service and in-service levels for the educational system to grow.

Secondly, the Federal Government has set up the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which is charged with the responsibilities of accreditation, certification and registration of teachers throughout the country. To this end, the National Certificate of Education (NCE) has already been accepted as the minimum teaching qualification for the registration of any professional teacher in Nigeria. All classroom practitioners, either in the secondary schnools or tertiary institutions with first degrees or HND without teaching qualifications would take advantage of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education programmee provided by Faculties of Education and institutes of Education in Nigerian Universities, before they can be qualified to register as professional teachers.

Units of Institute of Education Institute is currently housed in its permanent facility located at Main Campus of University of Abuja opposite Iddo village along Airport road Abuja. The facility is made up of an administrative block, world class Library and 1000 capacity classroom building. The second phase of the Institute will soon come under construction.

  1. Provide access for professional training for teachers leading to the award of B.Ed Degrees on part-time and sandwich basis as may be convenient to them.
  2. Offer Postgraduate Diploma in Education for the professional enhancement of teachers/lecturers through part-time and sandwich studies.
  3. Provide avenues for M.Ed Degrees in various fields of education to professionally equip practitioners in the educational sector on part-time and sandwich.
  4. Provide avenues for specific non-degree courses.
  5. Interact, collaborate and co-operate with relevant government agencies or Non-Governmental Organisations for improving educational services at all levels
  6. Provide professional vacation programmes for teenagers.
  7. Offer consultancy services in the area of educational research, management and staff development
  8. Open a forum for linkage and interaction between the University of Abuja and other Institutes within and outside the country on common educational and developmental matters.
  9. Carry out research activities and organise annual conferences/workshops/seminars for practitioners in the field of education.
  10. Publish and circulate relevant findings in the area of educational development
  11. Organise an Institute of Education Day as a forum for sharing thoughtful reflections of the problems and prospects of education services in Nigeria.
  12. Keep an up to date library of publication in education that would serve practitioners, researchers and students as a centre of excellence in the field of education and Operate within the approved guidelines of University Senate.
